Dogs and insurance… what’s the deal? If you’ve got a fluffy friend who needs protection, not to worry, we’ve got you covered. This article will be your one stop solution to understanding how you can obtain dog insurance (or insurance for other pets for that matter), how owning a dog can affect your homeowner’s insurance premium, and what options you have to keep your canine protected.

How can I get dog insurance?

Our insurance agency doesn’t specifically offer pet insurance, but we can certainly recommend you a credible company for you to get dog insurance through (or pet insurance for other pets too!). This company is called Trupanion, and they offer free quotes for your pets right on their website. The great thing about Trupanion is that they have affordable rates with great coverage, and they are accepted by pretty much all local veterinarians. With pet insurance such as Trupanion, any time your pet needs to visit a veterinarian, you can request an invoice from the veterinarian to send to your insurance company (Trupanion) and they can reimburse you for the expenses.

How does owning a Dog Affect Homeowners Insurance?

Sometimes, your dog may be covered by your homeowners insurance, such as in the case of a fire (although we certainly hope that none of our customers have to face this tragedy). Although, your dog or other pets may not always be listed directly on your homeowner’s policy, especially if you didn’t specify to have them listed with your agent. Certain breeds of dogs can even be excluded from policies depending on which carrier you are insured by. Some of the higher risk breeds include Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies, Akitas, and wolf-dog hybrids. Certain carriers may not have protection because they have blacklisted these breeds.

Here at our agency, we love all dogs, and we certainly don’t discriminate based on breeds. We know that with the right love and care, any canine can become man’s (or woman’s) best friend. If you are concerned that your homeowner’s insurance doesn’t have your pet listed on your policy, contact us today! We’ll ensure that your pets are properly listed on your homeowner’s insurance policy and find a carrier that can keep your dogs properly protected, regardless of the breed.
