When you think of the colors, red, white, and blue, you probably think of America and our freedoms. However, there’s more to the flag than just that.

What The American Flag Means

For many, the American flag represents the sacrifices made by those before us. Many made the ultimate sacrifice to protect those behind the stars and stripes. Therefore, it’s important to show respect for it.

Besides being associated with freedom, the colors have a pretty big significance to the foundation of our country. The white represents purity and innocence, red signifies hardiness and valor, while blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice. Additionally, the stars represent the 50 states in our country, while the 13 stripes symbolize the original 13 Colonies- Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island.

How to Care for The American Flag

When putting the flag away, it’s important to have it folded into a triangle with the stars of the flag showing. To fold the flag, have another person help you. First, have both parties stand across from each other and pull the flag taunt so it is parallel lengthwise to the ground. Next, fold the lower stripe in half, lengthwise over the stars, then fold it lengthwise again with the stars showing on top. Next, make a folded edge at the bottom of the striped half, make sure all the stripes align correctly and begin to make triangular folds until you reach the end of the flag. Finally, there will be a corner of the flag you cannot fold, so make sure to tuck it into the nearest corner. When done correctly, all that should be visible is the stars.

It’s also important to make sure the flag never touches the ground and isn’t flown out during extreme inclement weather. This is to show respect and ensures the flag doesn’t get damaged. Of course, if your flag has aged or holds damage our insurance agency would be happy to provide you with a replacement one free of charge during the week of Flag Day. We’ll also provide a proper disposal ceremony for your retired flag.

How To Display The American Flag

Displaying your American flag is just as important as caring for it. Whether you’re showing off Old Glory outside or inside, make sure to keep these guidelines in mind!

When displaying the flag indoors it’s important to always have the the blue field of stars shown to the viewer’s left. It’s also best to display it horizontally or vertically on a wall or in a window, this way observers can see the flag in its entirely.

However, when it is flown outdoors it must be raised during sunrise and lowered during sunset. It can be displayed all day and night as long as there are lights illuminating it. Additionally, when a flag is attached or hoisted to a pole it must be attached by the blue field of stars first. Flags should also not be flown upside down unless in times of major distress.

When a flag is displayed during a ceremony or parade, anyone not in uniform should face the flag and place their right hand over their heart. This shows a sign of respect for the flag, our country, and veterans.
