Water usage of the average American household typically increases in the summertime. However, during a drought, water becomes scarce, and some towns and cities may even put restrictions on water use.

That’s why water conservation is important. A lack of water can affect everyone and everything from farms to businesses to the well being of our environment.

Water is a critical resource we all share and need. Although, if we all work together we can help to conserve water with these water conservation tips:

1. Change your shower routine.

Typically, showers use around 2 gallons of water a minute. If you’re showering for a prolonged period of time, you’re wasting a lot of water. Aim for a 5-7 minute shower each time you bathe. However, if you need to take long showers, consider getting a more efficient shower head or take a “navy shower”, which is the process of utilizing water only to lather up and rinse soap off.

2. Be conscience of your hygiene habits.

When you brush your teeth, wash your face, or shave, don’t forget to shut your faucet off. You may think a few minutes of running water doesn’t have an impact, but it does. In fact, turning your sink off when not in use, can save gallons of water. Be conscience of your daily hygiene habits to help with water conservation.

3. Wash your dishes smarter.

Whether you own a dishwasher or choose to hand wash, washing the dishes uses a lot of water, several gallons of water to be exact.

Moreover, while you can’t avoid washing the dishes, you can do it more efficiently. When  you hand wash your dishes, don’t keep the water running. Additionally, when using a dishwasher, only use it when it’s full and absolutely need to. Water conservation is important, so the next time you wash dishes, be aware of how much water you’re using and how much you actually need.

4. Make your home more water efficient.

Washing machines and dishwashers utilize a lot of water, but if they’re not working as well as they could, they’re probably using more energy and water than they need to. Not only is this bad when water is scarce, but you’ll probably see a sudden increase in your water bill.

Therefore, check your home’s piping for any leaks annually. Leaky pipes contribute to a lot of wasted water, and if you happen to spot a leaky pipe, the experts at Aqua Pump can help you with all of your water needs.

5. Reuse water.

It may sound strange, but you can reuse water. We don’t recommend using dirty laundry or dish water, but water collected from rainfall, or boiled pasta can be used to water your plants or the lawn.

Using recycled water is much more efficient and environmentally friendly than using a sprinkling system or hose.
