Every day children and young adults with special needs are able to receive proper education and the skills they need to grow. Plus, with the technological advancements in society it’s easier for individuals with disabilities to get the assistance they need. However, these programs don’t always get the funding they need. Not only does this affect educators, but students with disabilities lose critical access to an education. Normal classrooms aren’t equipped with tools and teaching methods that can help students with physical or intellectual disabilities. Therefore, it’s important to keep Special Education programs accessible to everyone in Connecticut.

What is Special Education Day?
Special Education Day is a day where students with disabilities and their families come together to speak out for the importance of Special Education! On Tuesday, May 2, 2017, from 10AM to noon, this event will take place at the Connecticut State Capitol in the Old Judiciary Room, Room 310 on the 3rd floor.
The Capitol is located at 210 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, CT. Public parking in the Legislative Office Building is limited, so be sure to get there ahead of time!
This event is also sponsored by the Connecticut Special Education PTO Alliance. The Alliance was created to educate schools, families, and empower students with special needs.
Why is this important?
This day is important because it raises awareness about special education and its impact on the lives of Connecticut students. Special Education programs are important because they are created for students who are mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally handicapped. Programs are made to work with the needs of each individual student. Additionally, these services are at no cost to students and their families until they reach 21 years old. They are also important for the developmental, educational, and social developmental of each individual. Special Education programs are available to students with:
- Autistic Disorders
- Traumatic Brain Injuries
- Language Impairments
- Intellectual Disabilities
- Learning Disabilities
- Physical Impairments
- Health Impairments
- Emotional Disturbances
How can you help?
First off, if you can make it, don’t forget to register in advance! Send your name, town, and number of people coming with you to info@septoalliance.org. Additionally, all are welcome to attend this event, so even if aren’t a part of the Special Education program, you can still show up and support those who need it most.
Secondly, make sure you wear red, white, and blue on May 2nd. These colors show support to the educators, families, and students who are a part of the Special Education program.
And of course, make sure you get the word out to your friends, family, and co-workers. Tell them about the event in person or share it across social media. The more people who are aware of this event, the more support those with special needs receive. We hope to see you there!
