As a homeowner, you’ve probably filled your space with items, furniture, and other types of decor to make it your own. Maybe you’ve also filled your home with high tech electronics or expensive paintings. No matter what you’ve collected over the years, it clearly has value to you, and it’s important to make sure it’s protected.
Even if you have a homeowners insurance policy, there are coverage limitations on your personal belongings. Therefore, our insurance agency always suggests that every homeowner create a home inventory list.
What is a home inventory list?
In the the unfortunate event of a robbery or natural disaster, a home inventory is your best friend. For example, if a valuable item goes missing or becomes severely damaged, it can be incredibly difficult to prove an item’s worth or that it was even in your possession to begin with.
What should a home inventory list include?
Typically, home inventory lists include: the item’s date of purchase, the item’s valued amount or an original receipt, what the item is, where in the home the item is located, a picture of the item, and important information such as a serial or model number if available. This information plays a critical role in the claims process, because it’s proof of ownership and value. With a home inventory list in your hands, you won’t put yourself in a financial burden if you ever needed to replace any of your valuables due to theft or damage caused by a natural disaster.
Isn’t creating a home inventory list time consuming?
When you download our Insurance Agent app, your home inventory can be created in just a matter of minutes Once the app is installed on your smartphone, you’ll need to register as a new user. To do this, simply input your email and a password you’ll remember. Next, select “Paradiso Insurance” under the list of insurance agencies in your area, select the insurance agent you currently work with, and then you’ll be brought to the app’s home screen.
To create a home inventory list, simply tap the Property tab at the bottom. To add items in your home, you’ll need to take a photo first, so enable your smartphone’s permissions for the app.
Once you take a picture of the item and tap “use photo,” you’ll be brought to an item detail screen. On this screen, you can add more pictures (great for different angles) and add important detailed information about the item, such as the name, model, manufacturer, original cost, year it was bought, etc. The Insurance Agent app allows you to capture information that is needed in the event of a claim, so if anything does unfortunately does happen to your valuables, you’re prepared.
Additionally, the Insurance Agent app’s property tool allows you to assign items to different rooms and categories.
This makes organization easy, and allows you focus on one room at a time, so you don’t forget about important items. You don’t necessarily need to put everything you own into the app, but items like clothing, paintings, jewelry, collectibles, antiques, electronics, and furniture are expensive, and should be considered when making a home inventory list.
Once you’ve completed your home inventory list, you can email yourself a copy of the PDF to print or keep digitally right through the Insurance Agent app, or share it with our insurance agency. Simply tap “email me report PDF” or “share report with agent” to share it within the property screen.
Additionally, the Insurance Agent app is connected to a cloud based server that backs up information every time data is changed or added to it. That means that if you accidentally break, lose, or damage your smartphone, your home inventory will still be safely accessible.
