5 Pro Tips to Protect your Belongings During a Move

Moving is stressful and this is especially true if you are moving all the way across the country.

Besides serious concerns pertaining to adjusting to a new environment, a majority of homeowners worry that their important belongings would ‘disappear’ or sustain serious damage during the process.

One of the main sources of stress during the move is packing. That being said, what comes next would probably make you quite anxious, as well. Do you know whether your precious belongings would arrive safely?

Choose your Mover Carefully

Don’t make the mistake of hiring just anyone for handling your precious possessions. When it comes to protecting and securing your move finding a reputable and trustworthy moving company is one of the most important steps. To avoid moving scams, it is essential to check if the moving company you intend to hire is properly licensed.

Keep in mind that all professional and reliable interstate moving companies will have a unique license number which is issued by the US Department of Transportation. On the other hand, local movers are usually licensed by the state. You may verify a moving company’s complaint history and license number here. In addition, before hiring a moving company, make sure you get quotes from three moving companies (at least). Also, all estimates must be based on either a video inspection of the house or an in-person inspection. Do not make the mistake of accepting estimates from moving companies over the phone or internet.

Choosing the right mover can make the process much simpler and hasslefree. Make these lifestyle changes when you move into the new house to ease your transition.

Make a List of Items

Before you haul your items and belongings out to a moving truck, make sure you have a detailed inventory of all items you own. Consider preparing a spreadsheet with the quantity, description, and photos of all the valuables. While it might create extra work, taking inventory would make your move simpler and easier. Use the Right Boxes

Before you pack anything, always make sure that you’ve suitable boxes for the items you are packing.  In case the moving company is packing all items for you, it will not be a big problem.  If you are packing on your own, you must think about which boxes to get.

Begin with the dimension or size of the boxes. You may think that big is better; that being said when you’ve plenty of small and fragile items it is not safe and reassuring to pack them in one big box.  If you do this, it could cause small items to break or get damaged if large and heavier objects are packed on top.

You should pack smaller items in separate small boxes while large and heavier items should go in larger boxes. Also, get boxes in different sizes.  Plus, pack items in the right box. For example, if you have to pack your TV, you should pack it into the box that it came in. So, we hope that you saved it.  For a very fragile set of China, purchase a sturdy box which has been designed specifically for delicate items.  

In case you have old boxes in the garage you are thinking about using, then you should think again.  If these are boxes from liquor or grocery stores, they might be wet or damp and are likely to fall apart during your move. You need sturdy and solid boxes to prevent damage your items in the moving process.

 

Use Padding

You will certainly need padding, especially for your breakable and fragile items. Keep in mind that padding is a must in case the box is not completely filled up.  You do not want the fragile items to toss around in a box as this can cause them to break.  

Bubblewrap and foam peanuts are commonly used to protect breakable items. To pack plates, bowls,platters, as well as other dishes you could use tissue paper or plain newsprint.On the other hand, if you are on a tight budget, you may use blankets,comforters, pillows, stuffed animals and T-shirts.  These items can provide the cushioning you need.

Check Insurance Coverage

Check the renter’s or homeowners’ insurance coverage protects your valuables to see whether your belongings are covered, either partially or fully, during a move.
