Did you know that November is National Child Safety Month? At our insurance agency, we believe every family should be informed and educated about ways to keep your children safe from common dangers. No parent ever wants their child become injured or need emergency care, but it is important to understand what to do when such a circumstance unfolds. Here are our insurance agency’s top tips to keep your children safe from dangers during National Child Safety Month.

Poison Prevention

Younger children are notorious for putting everything in their mouth, and something like medication may look like a tasty snack to a curious toddler.

To prevent your child from an accidental poisoning make sure to:

  1. Keep all medicines and vitamins out of reach.
  2. Store cleaning supplies and other chemicals in a locked cabinet or closet.
  3. Have the number for poison control (1-800-222-1222) nearby or stored on your phone. In the unfortunate event something does happen, you’ll know who to call in an emergency.

Burn Prevention

Besides putting everything in their mouths, kids also have a habit of touching everything. Therefore, it’s imperative you take precautions to protect your children from becoming burned from hot surfaces.

  1. Before you do something like ironing or cooking, always make sure your children are in a safe place, and never allow them to be unsupervised in the kitchen! Children can easily hurt themselves with dangerous appliances or hot foods and liquids.
  2. Matches, lighters, candles, and other heating devices should always be kept out of reach from children.
  3. Always check the water temperature in your child’s bath or shower; if it’s too hot it can hurt their sensitive skin.

Fall Prevention

Kids love to explore, run, and may not be as steady on their feet. While a small fall may cause a bruise, something more serious can cause a broken bone or head injury.

Here’s how you can help prevent your child from tripping and falling:

  1. Keep doorways leading to dangerous areas, such as basements or attics, locked.
  2. Make sure all stairways have safety guards in front of them.
  3. Make sure all of your windows also have some sort of guard in front of them. This way your child won’t be tempted to climb out.
  4. Remind your children to not climb on furniture or tables; while it may seem like a fun adventure, they can fall and seriously hurt themselves.

Danger Outside of the Home

Kids can be exposed to dangers outside of the home, and it’s important to make sure you take the same proactive measures that you do inside of the home.

  1. Your children will most likely accompany you when you go out, so be sure to they’re safely restrained in a car seat appropriate for their height and age.  If you’re in Connecticut make sure you’re following all car seat laws.
  2. Never let your children be unsupervised on a playground or park, they could trip, get hurt on a playscape, or worse, pick up something that could cause them harm like garbage or an insect.
  3. When near water, such as a pool, lake, or beach, always make sure they have the proper flotation device on so they won’t drown. It’s also imperative to keep an eye on your child around water and to take action immediately if you notice them struggling to stay afloat.
  4. Have your child wash their hands after leaving a public area, because this helps to prevent sickness. You can also carry a box of hand wipes to bring with you for travel, this way you can try to prevent germs from spreading to your children.
