After news of a meteor shower striking Siberia shook the news world last week, many are wondering if that could ever happen around here. Well, could it? Absolutely! Just because it happened in a remote area of Russia doesn’t make us immune. While it’s very unlikely that this will happen, it’s still something to think about. If any upcoming meteor showers were to strike Connecticut, would your home insurance cover the damage?

You’re used to thinking that homeowners insurance can provide protection for weather related damages like thunderstorms and the recent blizzard we just experienced. But what exactly would happen if some stray meteors damaged your home? Would Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck be called to investigate? Well, no, but you may be able to receive coverage for the damages.

Falling objects from space—satellite debris, asteroids, meteors—are normally covered under a general homeowners insurance policy. This also applies to businesses and cars—if either are damaged from falling objects, then the building or comprehensive auto coverage would provide protection.
