On World Teacher’s Day, we want to take a moment to thank each and every teacher in the United States for their hard work and dedication. Without them, our country wouldn’t be the strong force that it is today. Be sure to stop and thank a teacher today, and let them know how grateful you are for everything they do for our youth.
What is World Teacher’s Day?
Held every year on October 5th since its establishment in 1994, World Teacher’s Day was founded as a day to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This Recommendation sets the standards of the rights and responsibilities of teachers, as well as the standards for their initial preparation, further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions. In 1997, UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) adopted the Recommendation concerning the status of Higher-Educated Teaching Personnel to further complement the 1966 Recommendation.
Today, more than 100 nations celebrate the day globally. The event is held every year on October 5th with the same goal: to guarantee that the requirements of future ages will continue to be met by educators. This day speaks to a massive degree on the mindfulness, comprehension, and thankfulness shown for the fundamental commitment to advancement that they make by teaching. The Education International Organization firmly trusts that this day should have a global reach and celebrated.
How is it celebrated?
On this day, many countries around the world have celebrations in honor of teachers in general, or those who have made a special contribution to their particular community. Unions and other educational organizations hold events around the world in honor of teachers through parades, dinners, and fundraising events. There are also international organizations such as TESOL International (formerly Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages), and Education International, that organize events on the international, national, and local levels. Many areas choose to honor their teachers by putting up posters, sending electronic cards or letters of appreciation to the teachers in their areas!
How Can I Celebrate World Teachers Day?
There is always something that people in your community can do to recognize those who are making a difference. Think back to the time that you were in school. I think it’s safe to say we were not always well-behaved students and we often wore on our teacher’s nerves; but without the time and effort that these teachers put into our education, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Consider reaching out and letting them know how they have helped to form your life and how they have had a positive impact on you as an individual. If you have your own child, encourage them to create a personal card or create a poem for their favorite teacher. Even a simple “thank you” can make a teacher’s day!
