Did you know that driving in the rain can actually be more dangerous than driving in the snow? While driving in the rainy weather can be unavoidable at times, it’s important to take precautions to stay safe.

To stay safe in the rain, make sure you follow these tips.

Plan Ahead

Rainstorms can be unpredictable, so be sure to check the weather before you head out. If you know there is a chance for a severe storm on your commute, be sure to leave earlier than normal to give yourself time, and take it slow. The last thing we’d want to happen is for you to get into an accident because you hydroplaned on a roadway.

Check Your Tires

You should check the tread on your tires seasonally, if the tire tread is too worn, they won’t grip well and can even cause an accident. While you’re at it, be sure to check your vehicle’s tire air pressure. Too little can cause the tires to go flat, while too much can actually cause them to burst. It’s imperative your vehicle has the correct amount of air pressure for safety and control of your car.

Keep Your Car Maintained

Car maintenance is important, and if you’re not regularly replacing parts when they need to be replaced, this could put you or other drivers at risk. Things like windshield wipers and headlights are a necessity in bad weather, so be sure they’re working properly before you head out. You don’t want to cause an accident while driving in the rain because you can’t see.

Avoid Flooded Roadways

Even if a roadway isn’t completely submerged, you can still risk hydroplaning. If you aren’t familiar, hydroplaning causes your vehicle to lose traction on wet roadways, causing you to lose control while you drive. To prevent hydroplaning maintain a slow speed, and do not slam on the brakes.

If you do unfortunately experience hydroplaning, you’ll need to react quickly, but stay calm to prevent serious accidents from happening.

Driving in the rain can be dangerous, but when you take the right precautions you can avoid a serious accident.
