Sure, the saying says “April showers brings May flowers,” but most times, April showers actually bring floods, instead! As your trusted insurance agency, we believe it is important that you are always 100% prepared for the worst case scenario. Whether this season brings flooding or not, the following tips are sure to have you ready for whatever weather hits Connecticut!

#1: Always educate yourself with the community evacuation plan. You should also create a family communication plan and make sure your loved ones are aware of it.

#2: Build an emergency kit that is easily accessible when the time comes to use it. Be sure to fill it with extra batteries, radio, flashlight, medications, etc.

#3: Do you have check valves installed in your home? Consider doing so to prevent flood water from backing up into the drains of your home.

#4: If you are expecting a flood, turn off all utilities at the main switches and/or valves. You may also want to unplug ALL appliances.

#5: If you live in a high-risk flood zone, it is best to elevate the water heater, furnace and electric panel in your home.

#6: Store valuables and documents in a safe, waterproof place. This may include birth certificates, passports, insurance documents, financial docs, etc.

Follow the tips above and you may weather the storm much easier this season.
