It’s prom season in Connecticut! If you have a son or daughter who will be attending the prom this year, you may be both proud and worrisome. While it is wonderful to see your teen enjoying the event of the year, you may worry about the safety when out on the road so late at night. In the year 2013, drinking while driving as well as distracted driving are also a growing concerns.

This week, our agency has some safety tips to pass along to your kids. If he or she follows your advice and guidance, their fun-filled prom night should end on a high note!

•    Make sure EVERYONE in the car is wearing a seatbelt.

•    Drive defensively. What is defensive driving? It simply means to keep a sharp eye out for other distracted drivers on the road. There are many courses you can take to help you prevent accidents before they happen.

•    NEVER drive if you have had a drink (or anyone else, for that matter!)

•    Daughters – bring a pair of comfy shoes to drive in, not your heels!

•    Use GPS or a map to arrive at the prom destination safely.

•    Never hesitate to call for a ride home if you are too tired, have been drinking, etc.

•    Keep a cell phone on hand – in case of emergency.

Parents – passing these tips along may keep your son or daughter safe and sound on prom night. What else can you do to lower the risks? You may want to consider hiring a limo or chauffeur service.
