Summertime at the beachEveryone has to be a little more careful about health and skin care when the summer comes. This is especially true for seniors who might already be dealing with existing medical issues or prescription medications. It is important to know a few summer safety tips for seniors.

Drink Fluids Constantly

The first tip is to drink fluids constantly during the summer. Seniors are very vulnerable to dehydration and heat stroke when the weather is hot. You want to drink water all day long. You could also drink fruit juices or sports beverages that contain electrolytes. Carry a bottle of water around with you when heading outside. Avoid drinks that dehydrate you like alcohol or sugary sodas.

Do Activities Earlier or Later Than Usual

Another tip is to start doing your activities earlier or later than usual. The sun is the hottest in the middle of the day from around noon to 3 p.m. If you have to go outside, then get out early while it is still cool. Alternately, wait until later in the afternoon when the sun is going down. This will allow you to stay cooler while running errands or walking around.

Get a Good Summer Wardrobe

The clothes seniors wear in the summer can make a big difference. You want to assemble a wardrobe that includes loose-fitting clothes that are light-colored. Lighter colored clothes reflect sunlight better. Loose clothes allow cool air to circulate the body. Additionally, you want to choose natural fabrics like cotton that will breathe and wick away any moisture during hot summer days.

Use Fans and Air Conditioning

A final tip is to use fans and air conditioning liberally to stay comfortable. Some seniors refuse to turn on air conditioners because they are noisy or use extra electricity. The reality is that fans and air conditioners can keep your body at a healthy and comfortable temperature so that you do not experience adverse issues due to the heat.
