Hooligan trying to break a car's windowYou might not think that someone could steal your car, but there are people who steal cars every day in the United States. There are some things that you can do to get your car back or get compensated for the vehicle.

Call The Police
The first thing that you need to do is contact the police to make a report of the car being stolen. Give the officer all of the information about the car including the tag number, color, make, model, and condition. If there are any special features of the car, such as a spoiler or tinted windows, it will make it easier to locate the car.

Call Your Insurance Company
You should know about any policies your insurance company has pertaining to a stolen vehicle. Contact your agent to determine what you need to file and how long you need to wait before a claim is established. If the vehicle is not recovered, then you could be compensated for the amount of the vehicle, or a portion of the value.

Prevention
There are some ways that you can make it a little harder for someone to steal your car. Install an alarm system so that the horn sounds and the lights flash if someone tries to open the doors. Lock your doors when you arrive at your destination, whether it’s at work or a shopping center. Not only can this deter someone from stealing your car, but it can also help in lowering your insurance rates because you are taking measures in prevention.

Don’t Leave Items In The Car
Many car thefts occur during the holiday season when people leave packages in the back seat of the car so that others can see them. Put your items in the trunk of your car and try to keep your parcels in a neutral box or bag. Don’t leave your pocket book or wallet in plain view.
