It’s Independence Day, July 4th! A day to celebrate a pivotal time in history. What will you be getting into today? A barbecue? Fireworks? Here at Paradiso Insurance we love to celebrate too! But what is a celebration without a true understanding of what’s being celebrated? We don’t want you to pack up the burgers and put away the fireworks, but what we do want is to make sure that you truly know what is being celebrated on July 4th. Let us explain.
Independence Day is the day that recognizes the adoption of the Declaration of Independence which declared independence from Great Britain. This cherished document was written by Thomas Jefferson in which he expresses the firm beliefs, opinions, and grievances of the American people regarding “self-evident truths”. These grievances against the king stood to justify the colonies breaking free from the mother country.
In simpler terms, the Americans were sick and tired of being disrespected. They realized the King’s interests only lied in taking power away from the people. He refused to sign laws written by American leaders, he took control of Judges in the court system, ignored laws of the American government, punished people without a fair trial and jury, burned villages, took ships, and killed many people. Clearly, he was not a fair man, and the Americans were not going to put up with it any longer. Through the Declaration of Independence the Americans declared themselves free and independent states with the power to build their own government.
We’re glad you let us give you some background behind your weekend celebrations! Don’t let it end there, educate your children, friends, and family so everyone can celebrate with pride! Happy Fourth of July! Independence is yours!
