October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and is a reminder for all to take their health seriously, get regular checkups, and always see a doctor if you notice any unusual changes or lumps.

How does breast cancer happen?

Cancer can unfortunately happen anywhere, but for most women it happens in the breast area. When cells that have become damaged do not die off as they would in the normal cell growth process, these cells can clump up can cause a cancerous tumor. In the case of breast cancer, cells can break off from a tumor and enter lymph vessels near breast tissue. Most commonly, these damaged cells cause cancer in the milk ducts of the breast also known as, ductal carcinoma.

What actually causes breast cancer?

It’s still unknown what truly causes breast cancer in most patients, but age, gender, genetics, and poor lifestyle factors seem to increase a woman’s risk of getting it in her lifetime. Myths surrounding the cause of breast cancer put the blame on things like bras, implants, deodorants, antiperspirants, mammograms, caffeine, plastic utensils, microwaves, and phones. However, these do not cause breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer for women to get. Additionally, every 1 in 8 women in America will be diagnosed with the deadly disease. Women aren’t alone in the matter either, because men are also susceptible to getting breast cancer as well. It is much rarer in men, but about 2,470 are diagnosed with it each year.

How can breast cancer be prevented?

Breast cancer can be beaten if it’s detected early. Be sure to get your annual mammogram done at your doctor and don’t forget to perform self exams, finding breast cancer early can save your life.
